Hal is made the leader (or skirl) of a ragtag band of misfits within the community using the Ship Hal created, the Heron, which is also there brothersband’s name, which is the first to have a triangular and not square sail, affecting a large part of the story and being the cause of many victories along with their oversized crossbow, ‘the Mangler’, made in book 2. The story follows Hal, a half araluen ( the country where Ranger’s Apprentice takes place) half skandian who lost his father at a young age and became friends with the drunk champion Thorn, who lost his hand and Stig, a outcasted boy due to his Father’s desertion.
